I'm Back(!!)...and Dressing a Bit Differently These Days
Let's just say, my body is going through some pretty significant changes.
Hi guys, I missed you! It’s been two months since I’ve published a post on Substack—or really checked in on anyone else’s posts—and I’m excited to be back and catch up with you all. Part of the reason for my departure was burnout, writing every week for nearly two years straight and not gaining much traction was starting to weigh on my self esteem and I knew I needed a break from the monotony of it all. The other part, was because (drumroll, please!), I’m pregnant!
For the past 14 weeks, I’ve been deep in the throws of my first pregnancy which included unrelenting nausea, aversions to coffee (my one true love), and bone deep tiredness. (Along with excitement, of course!). While I was getting dressed here and there for work, everything I was wearing was for comfort and was hardly inspired. Now that I’m in my second trimester, and starting to feel a bit better, I’m excited to get dressed again and talk about it!
I’ve been pinning looks like crazy to see what I’m drawn to and my biggest takeaway is that, I’d love to size up in the normal pieces (if I can) instead of buying maternity wear. I know there are some stylish maternity brands out there (send them my way please), but I will be avoiding elastics over my bump for as long as I can. Side note: I am considering a Nuuly subscription since the maternity selection seems pretty versatile. If you’ve used the brand before, please let me know your thoughts!
Here are the looks I’m gravitating towards.
Not to state the obvious, but the looser the better right now. I’m often bloated and just not in the mood to squeeze into anything constricting. Pregnancy aside, the New York summers require lightweight, breathable clothing. I’m wearing lots of linen pants, eyelet tanks, and peasant skirts.
The New York Times recently published a piece on how women are more comfortable showing off their pregnancy bellies now more than ever and I’m obviously here for it. By the time I’m really showing, it will likely be fall, so I’ll be opting for button ups—buttoned at the top and unbuttoned at the bottom—to have my bump on full display.
I love all things spooky, so I’m extra excited to dress like a ghost haunting a lighthouse this summer. A breezy, cotton nightgown is the perfect way to stay cool, stylish, and comfortable. I’ll add on a cardigan and some boots once the weather cools.
While I haven’t been buying clothes, you bet your a$$ I’ve been buying beauty products. Some recent wins include:
The Rhode Pocket Bronzer in Sunbed: I normally don’t like cream bronzers (most sink into my skin and make everything look very patchy), but not this bronzer. I’ve gotten so many compliments on my “pregnancy glow” since buying this product I want to shake Mrs. Biebers hand. The color and consistency are perfect.
Merit Lip Liner in June: Speaking of color and consistency, I have not used a single other lip liner since getting this Merit product. It’s a brownish-pinkish nude that is so flattering and long lasting.
Merit Solo Cream Eye Shadow in Glacé: I’ve been really obsessed with glowy pink makeup and this soft, shimmery shade makes my eyes really pop.
